The Myth of “Discovered”
Published 2 months ago • 1 min read
Every filmmaker has the fantasy: you’re at a festival, someone important watches your film, and suddenly, everything changes. The big break. The golden ticket. The moment you’ve been waiting for. Except it rarely works that way. Waiting to be “discovered” is a trap. It’s passive. It assumes that the power lies in someone else’s hands, and all you can do is hope they notice you. But the truth? No one’s coming to rescue you. The good news: you don’t need rescuing. Today, the tools to build your audience, share your story, and market your work are at your fingertips. You don’t need permission from a gatekeeper to connect with people who care about your film. Start small. Start messy. Share behind-the-scenes moments on Instagram. Write a blog about your creative process. Send out a newsletter to 10 people who’ve supported you before. Each connection builds momentum. Your job isn’t to sit around waiting for the “right” person to find you. Your job is to show up, consistently, in front of the right audience. The people who love what you’re making, who will tell their friends, who will follow you from one project to the next. Discovery isn’t the goal. Connection is. And connection is something you can start creating right now. Don’t wait for the golden ticket. It doesn’t exist. But the tools to build something better? They’re already in your hands. |
